The Samaritans respond to one-time needs for assistance as opposed to providing ongoing financial support. Recipients must be Salem residents (or come from Salem). Often their need arises from the loss of a job or inability to work due to injury or illness. We have honored thousands of requests over the years.
HOW WE HELP
They Needed a Hand Up. The Samaritans reached out.
- Thanks to the Samaritans, a single mother was able to buy new tires, so she could drive to and from work.
- Samaritan funds have stocked food pantries, supported the Salem Mission, and paid overdue utility bills for families dealing with illness, job loss…or both.
- We have provided YMCA and Boys and Girls Club camperships for a child who had recently become homeless, one being raised by a grandmother who suddenly passed away, others who would have been left home alone all summer.
- We helped pay the rent for a woman whose husband was killed in a car accident, leaving her with four children and a fifth on the way.
